Koch was born in Looward, Holland (April 1, 1854) and emigrated to the United States (1884), settling in Clara City, Minnesota, but also lived in St. Paul, Chicago, a number of cities in Texas, and on the West Coast. He pursued a number of widely varied business enterprises, mostly land development in Minnesota, Texas, and other states.
